Running Your Store

Discounts & Promotions

Learn how to create discount codes and automatic discounts in PlanetShopping, set eligibility and usage rules, and schedule promotions.

Purpose

PlanetShopping lets you create discount codes and automatic discounts that apply at checkout. You can also use discounts alongside compare-at prices to support promotions across your store.

Discount types

From Discounts, select Create Discount. PlanetShopping provides four discount types:

  • Product Discount
  • Order Discount
  • Free shipping
  • BuyXGetY

The settings available depend on the discount type you choose. This guide explains the verified Product Discount workflow and the controls that are available when creating it.

Create a product discount

  1. From the Merchant Panel, select Discounts.
  2. Select Create Discount.
  3. Choose Product Discount.
  4. Under Method, choose Discount Code or Automatic Discount.
  5. Configure the discount value, products or collections it applies to, minimum purchase requirements, customer eligibility, usage limits, combinations and active dates.
  6. Review the Summary as you work.
  7. Select Save Discount when finished.

Discount code or automatic discount

For a Product Discount, choose one of these methods:

Discount Code — The customer enters a code at checkout. Enter your own code or select Generate to create one.

Automatic Discount — The discount is applied automatically when the order meets the rules you configure.

Set the discount value

Under Values, choose the discount type and enter the value. The Product Discount editor supports a percentage or amount value.

The discount value must be greater than zero.

Choose what the discount applies to

Under Applies To, choose:

  • Specific collections
  • Specific products

Use Search or Browse to select the collections or products that should receive the discount.

Minimum purchase requirements

You can control whether customers must meet a minimum purchase condition before the discount applies. The available options are:

  • No minimum requirements
  • Minimum purchase amount
  • Minimum quantity of items

Choose the option that matches the promotion you are running.

Customer eligibility

Under Customer eligibility, choose who can use the discount:

  • All customers
  • Specific customer segments
  • Specific customers

This lets you run general promotions or target an offer to selected customers or customer groups.

Maximum discount uses

You can place limits on how often a discount is used.

Available controls include:

  • Limit number of times this discount can be used in total
  • Limit to one use per customer

Use these options when you want to control the overall redemption volume or prevent repeated use by the same customer.

Discount combinations

Product Discounts can be configured to combine with:

  • Other product discounts
  • Shipping discounts

Select the combinations you want to allow. If no combination option is selected, the Summary indicates that the discount cannot be combined with other discounts.

Active dates

Use Active Dates to control when the discount starts.

Set the Start Date and Start Time. Select Set end date when the promotion should stop automatically at a specific date and time.

Review the summary

The Summary panel gives you a quick view of the discount as you configure it, including its type, method and combination rules.

Review the Summary before saving so the promotion matches what you intend to offer customers.

Using compare-at prices with discounts

PlanetShopping also supports using discounts alongside compare-at prices. Compare-at prices can show customers the relationship between a product's regular and promotional pricing, while discounts can apply additional checkout rules according to the promotion you create.

Use the two deliberately and make sure the final customer price is what you expect before advertising an offer.

Test your promotion

Before promoting a discount publicly, test it with a cart that meets the conditions you configured.

Check that:

  • the correct products or collections qualify
  • the discount value is correct
  • minimum purchase rules behave as expected
  • customer eligibility is correct
  • usage and combination rules match your plan
  • the discount starts and ends when intended

Tips & Best Practices

  • Keep discount codes short and easy to enter.
  • Use clear promotional terms so customers understand what qualifies.
  • Set minimum purchase rules only when they support the offer.
  • Use customer eligibility carefully for targeted campaigns.
  • Add usage limits when an offer should be restricted.
  • Review combination settings to avoid unintended stacking.
  • Set an end date for time-limited campaigns.
  • Test the promotion before announcing it.
